Northern Shipyard came into being in June 1945. In the beginning of its existence it was named Shipyard No3, and its activity was mainly production and repairs of trains, trams and small floating units.In December 1945 the crew of Shipyard was 694 workers including 8 engineers and 28 technicians. The engineering personnel soon increased as a result of calling together the designers department. It was the first designers department of United Polish Shipyards.
Year 1948 brought first launches. The smacks for Gdańsk Institute of Sea Fishing were delivered for exploitation. Also 53 rescue boats were built that year.In 1949 shipyard started the production of fisher’s lugo-trawlers. In February 1950 Shipyard No3 changed its name into Northern Shipyard and in 1951 it finally finished with the production of trains and started the specialization in building fishing vessels, small cargo and scientific-exploring ships and also ships furniture. The experience obtained during the making of first lugo-trawlers and technical equipment, which the shipyard received, made easier all the work and increased the rate of production to such level that in year 1952 shipyard delivered 14 vessels of this type to the ship-owners.In year 1955, based on government decisions, the cooperation with the military started. Since that time the Shipyard have been building mainly ships and specialized boats for Navy’s of PRL, ZSRR, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and NRD – mainly vessels for landing troops, hydrographical, rescue, training and torpedo’s smacks. In parallel, highly specialized fishing ships were produced, like super-seiners, super-trawlers and others.In 1975 year the shipyard was given name of “Westerplatte heroes”. In year 1980 Gdańsk was the arena for events that changed the face of the whole world.
In these historical events the workers of Northern Shipyard also had their part.In 80-s Northern Shipyard continued started earlier productions of the series of super-trawlers, super-seiners, hydrographical units and ships for landing troops for Soviet Union. The last four ships were delivered in 1991. Contracts signed with the PRL Navy were realized in the beginning of 90-s.In this time the difficult situation on world’s shipyard’s market enforced to radical changes In production profile and in marketing actions. As a result, the Shipyard started to specialize in building cargo containers , mainly distributed into markets of Germany and Nigeria. With the day of 1 April 1993 Northern Shipyard of “ Westerplatte Heroes” was transformed into corporation and its official name from the day forward is “ Northern Shipyard S.A”. In the late 90-s Shipyard extended its offer with passenger-car ferries, fishing ships, tugboats and ships for off-shore industry.Since June 2003 the main share-holder of Shipyard is Gdańsk “Repair” Shipyard.
